Jim and Joanne Mollison
2024, 6 Months

My name is Jim. My wife, Joanne, and I came to stay at Maling School for 6 months in 2016, 2018, and again in 2024 after the school reopened after covid. We are both older but we both love practicing martial arts. We have never been healthier or fitter than after staying at Maling for a few months. I usually drop anywhere from 30 to 50 lbs thanks to the intense exercise we do everyday. Joanne’s hair was gray when we started here the first time but after 2 months of the life here her hair colour returned. Joanne and I have met many amazing people here from all over the world and have made friendships that will last forever. You will find people of every age and ethnicity here. It’s a great place to grow as a martial artist and as a person. We love it here!

One of the standout features of Maling Shaolin is the hands-on and one-to-one instruction that they provide. Returning to the academy, I was pleased to see that this personalized approach to teaching remains a top priority. The instructors take the time to understand each student’s strengths, weaknesses, and individual goals, tailoring their guidance accordingly.

Life at the Maling academy was so easy to fall in love with… 🙂 The thrill of overcoming your own challenges, fears, and failures is addictive! I had the time of my life!  If you have even half a thought about going here, I strongly recommend you to do so NOW! In the words of Paolo Coelho: “If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine. It’s lethal”.

Spirituality in Shaolin: Why Shaolin Training Begins with the Body

July 8, 2026

Many students arrive at a Shaolin kung fu school expecting constant meditation, spiritual discussion, and a peaceful “zen” environment. But in Shaolin training, the spiritual path usually begins somewhere much more practical: the body.
